Who am I?
I have the joy and the honor of being the co-leader of MYJ alongside Dr. Kelly Sherman-Conroy and such a powerhouse team of diverse leaders. I bring positive, motivating energy; a passion for dynamic, creative language; and experience in producing high-quality music concerts.
I'm also a nationally-touring artist, author, educator, and speaker based in Minneapolis, MN, employing poetry, music, theater, and dance to shape culture.
My work has been featured on BET, CNN, and VH1. I'm the Founder and Director of a multimedia production company, The New Renaissance, the frontman of the emerging soul-funk band, The Poetic Diaspora, co-creator of JUSTmove, racial justice education through art, and author of We Rise Higher: Poems and Prayers for Graduates.
I have keynoted, facilitated conversation, and served as a teaching artist at hundreds of high schools and universities including programs in New York, and Boston, and most recently as the Artist-in-Residence at Luther Seminary where I earned a Masters in Theology of the Arts.
This is a tremendous opportunity to honor, affirm, and empower our BIPOC youth in ways they may not experience otherwise. As community leaders, we have the responsibility and privilege of not only sharing our wisdom and resources to guide the next generation, we also have the gift of joining them in their work of co-creating the world we long to live in together!
One Favorite thing to look forward to:
The music has always been what moves my body and my spirit! Our hope is that year's music will serve to fan the flames of healing justice and joy in the hearts of our young people.
“I’m highly suspicious of the discourses of hope. I think that’s too abstract.
The question is not having hope.
The question is *being* hope.
Having hope is still too detached, too spectatorial. You gotta be a participant. You gotta be an agent.”
